This Reading Month, we enjoyed beautiful moments with the kids! We had themed activities inspired by The Cat in the Hat, fun story-time moments, and playful hands-on experiences that brought stories to life. From crafts to rhyming games and laughter-filled activities, every day felt a little special—and that’s exactly how SF Preschool Early Literacy comes to life in our classrooms. Take a look at some of our memories:

With so much digital entertainment available today—movies, mobile apps, and endless short videos—it’s easy to wonder whether books still play an important role in children’s lives. The answer is absolutely yes! At SF School, early literacy is at the heart of building strong language skills, develop critical thinking, growing their ability to learn, and communicate.
Through regular reading, children are exposed to new words and ways of using language while strengthening the brain connections needed for communication and learning.

What stories did you enjoy when you were young?
Books introduce children to a much wider range of words and ideas than everyday conversation alone. As a result, children who are regularly read to, hear significantly more vocabulary and language patterns. Over time, this exposure helps them better understand how language works as they grow as studies show.
Local Places Where early literacy Comes to Life
Encouraging a love of reading doesn’t stop in the classroom. Miami is full of vibrant cultural spaces where children can discover the magic of books, storytelling, and creativity.
Libraries, museums, and local bookstores frequently host family programs designed to introduce children to reading in fun and interactive ways. Through these experiences, children build language skills while discovering that reading can be an exciting adventure.
Here we share a few places around Miami where families can explore books and storytelling together. Exploring local spaces like these helps children see that reading is connected to the world around them.
Miami-Dade Public Library System
The Miami-Dade Public Library System offers a wide range of story-time programs and family literacy events designed for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. These sessions often include songs, stories, and interactive activities that help children develop early language and reading skills in a playful environment. Closest branches to our location are North Central Branch Library and Culmer/Overtown Branch Library.
You can explore all their locations here and calendar for kid’s activities here.

Bookleggers Library
This is another option to join story time activities. They do it every last Saturday of the month. This library created “Adventure-Leggers” fest, happening on October 2026, one of Miami’s book, comic, and art festival for kids. It’s a free event inviting families to explore storytelling through interactive experiences like comics, music, artist-led workshops, and STEM activities. This is not an advertising, we just want to encourage you to explore activities around!

From Busy Days to Cozy Moments: nurture Early Literacy at Home
A reading corner doesn’t need fancy furniture or decorations. A comfortable spot on the floor, some books, and a cozy pillow can easily create a welcoming place where children feel excited to explore stories.
Keep books in a visible and accessible place so children can pick them up whenever they feel curious. Reading for just 5–10 minutes each day—before bedtime or after dinner—can help children build consistent reading habits. Talk about the things you read, ask them questions to enhance reading comprehension and build their own imagination.
And the most important: Let children choose the book they want to read! They often become more engaged with a story they picked than one that is imposed.

Children learn by observing their parent’s habits, teach by example
Reading time is an opportunity to reconnect with your own childhood memories. Do you remember the feeling of holding your favorite book or discovering a new story?
Have you already noticed how children copy your exact facial expressions, gestures, and even the words you say? Those little, silly moments can bring so much laughter—but they also reveal something powerful. Children are constantly learning by watching you. When they see you picking up a book, even just for a few minutes here and there, they’re likely to do the same and begin building that habit naturally.
This doesn’t require a major change to your routine. Even small habits—such as reading a few pages while your child plays nearby or sharing a quick story before bed—can help create a positive connection with books.
Over time, these shared moments often become some of the most meaningful memories families create together.

At SF School Preschool in Miami, we believe that encouraging curiosity and a love for books is an important part of early childhood education. Through storytelling, play-based learning, and engaging classroom activities, we help children develop strong language skills and confidence as learners.
Because of this approach, families throughout Miami, Florida trust SF School to provide a nurturing environment where children feel inspired to explore, ask questions, and grow.
